UPDATE 17:11 UTC
Number of injured people climbs to 104 – severe damage to residential houses
Xinhua news reports : At least 104 people were injured in a 4.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Iran’s western province of Lorestan.
The quake was followed by several minor aftershocks, causing severe damage to residential buildings and some houses experienced power cuts, according to the report.
Twenty-six of the injured remained in hospital, while others were released after treatment.

Earthquake Report comment :
At least 82 people have been injured in Do-rud, when a M 4.9 very shallow earthquake occurred during the  morning  (at 07:22 AM local time).
Based on Iranian Seismological center reporting, the epicenter of the earthquake was near Do-Rud and Razan, although some smaller villages are closer to the epicenter.
From the very beginning Earthquake-Report.com colored this earthquake ORANGE as we are aware (based on previous Iranian earthquakes) that even smaller magnitudes if they occur near cities, can cause a lot of misery like damage, injuries, etc.
As most of the houses are not build earthquake-proof, we always fear for the worst.
Do-rud (also written as Doorud and Do rud, has a population of 114,395 inhabitants)

Indonesia massive M 7.5 earthquake – second big M 6.2 aftershock

Earthquake Report comment :
Again a powerful shallow aftershock. The strongest so far.
Preliminary records show that the epicenter is again located on the southern edge of South Pagai.
After analyzing satellite pictures we assume that the most important inhabited village is located at the northern side of South Pagai. This location has not been directly hit so far. On the satellite pictures we can see a limited number of modern buildings.

Powerful 6.1 aftershock hits Pagai Island again

Earthquake Report comment :
Powerful aftershock with a preliminary epicenter at the eastern shores of Mentawai Island South Pagai.
GDACS has just issued a GREEN earthquake alert for this earthquake = very limited chance on damage and/or injuries.
Earthquake-report.com takes this aftershock very serious, as the epicenter is under the island and as eventually earlier damaged buildings from the main quake might collapse. Calculated models from USGS are expecting again a MMI of VI to VII.

Earthquake Report comment :
Epicenter in the Molucca Sea 175 km from Manado (Sulawesi). Earthquake-Report.com estimates that this earthquake due to the distance to the nearest islands will not be dangerous. NO tsunami bulletins have been published by NOAA.

Moderate seaquake south of New Zealand South Island

Milford Sound, Fjordland National Park

Fjordland National Park - Image by smileywhiley05 via Flickr

Earthquake Report comment :
USGS has published a seaquake to the south of Fjordland National Park.
This is one of the first reports we are publishing in this area, although it is a known fault line with linked earthquakes.
What makes this new earthquake (seaquake) even more special is that GNS Science did not report about this tremor.
At earthquake-report.com we do not always understand the publishing policy of governmental organizations. The Christchurch aftershock of M 4.8 was not published by USGS although they publish lesser quakes in the rest of the world. Same goes for GNS Science who is publishing Magnitudes of only 2, but did not published this one.
Some published quakes are sometimes hoaxes, but this tremor can be noticed very well on the seismograph drum installed in Southland

Moderate earthquake near Lake Turkana – Kenya, Sudan, Ethiopia

Omo River Delta and Lake Turkana, Ethiopia and...

Omo river delta and Lake Turkana - Image via Wikipedia

Earthquake Report comment :
Moderate earthquake near Lake Turkana in the border area of Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya.

The earthquake happened on the East African Rift.
The East African Rift is an active continental rift zone in eastern Africa that appears to be a developing divergent tectonic plate boundary. It is part of the larger Great Rift Valley. The rift is a narrow zone in which the African Plate is in the process of splitting into two new tectonic plates called the Somali Plate and the Nubian Plate, which are subplates or protoplates.

In the middle of Lake Turkana lies Central Island, an active volcano. Today’s event can eventually be linked to the activity in this nearby volcano.

Lake Turkana, formerly known as Lake Rudolf,  is the world’s largest permanent desert lake and the world’s largest alkaline lake. By volume it is the world’s fourth largest salt lake after the Caspian Sea, Lake Issyk-Kul and the (shrinking) Aral Sea, and among all lakes it ranks twentieth.

Due to temperature, aridity and geographic inaccessibility, the lake retains its wild character. Nile crocodiles are found in great abundance on the flats. The rocky shores are home to scorpions and carpet vipers. Although the lake and its environs have been popular for expeditions of every sort under the tutelage of guides, rangers and experienced persons, they certainly must be considered hazardous for unguided tourists.

Lake Turkana National Parks are now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Sibiloi National Park lies on the lake’s eastern shore, while Central Island National Park and South Island National Park lie in the lake. Both are known for their crocodiles.
