Strong M 5.7 aftershock jolts Chile Bio-Bio province

8 months after the devastating M 8.8 earthquake in Chile, strong aftershocks are continuing to hit the same area.
Today’s quake occurred on the mainland in  between Lebu and Canete.
75,000 people may have experienced a V Mercalli value = moderate shaking
180,000 people may have experienced a IV Mercalli value = light shaking
The earthquake happened in the middle of the Chilean night at 2:58 AM.

M 5.5      2010/09/08 17:39   Depth 10.0 km     KURIL ISLANDS

Epicenter in the immediate area of the 1963 Great Kuril Islands Earthquake. The earthquake had a magnitude of 8.5 and was followed by an aftershock of M 7.8. Both earthquakes triggered tsunamis that were observed around the northern part of the Pacific ocean. Luckily, no damage, deaths or injuries are recorded for these two earthquakes or their associated tsunamis. The epicenter of this earthquake was located on the edges of the island arc and the Kamchatka, Kuril trench (see satellite image)

Chile – M 5.1 – Moderate aftershock near Lebu

Chilean people cannot count the number of aftershocks anymore since the mega-earthquake measuring M 8.8 on February 27. According to their reports on Facebook, this was a small one.
