Moderate but dangerous shallow earthquake on the Kyrgyzstan – Tibet border

Karakul Lake

Earthquake Report comment :
A very shallow earthquake happened right on the Kyrgyzstan/ Tibet (China)/Tajikistan border.
If the preliminary epicenter location will be confirmed, the danger might be limited.
Because of the Chinese Tibet policy, it is very hard to focus on satellite details in this area of the world.
600 mountain villagers will experience a VI Mercalli shaking (Strong shaking)
20,000 people a moderate shaking (Mercalli V)
Landslides and poor construction of the houses are the biggest dangers with an earthquake of this magnitude.
About 20 km from Karakul lake.

China (Tibet) – M 5.0 and M 4.4 – 2 moderate but dangerous earthquakes rattle the Tibetan Himalaya

Earthquake Report comment :
2 moderate but dangerous earthquakes rattled the Tibetan Himalaya. Although the strength of the earthquakes was rather limited, the Himalayan hills in the epicenter area is steep and can be an easy target for major landslides. The satellite pictures of the second quake show many villages near the ridge. Luckily this earthquake was considerably lighter than the first one which struck
In most of the surrounding villages live only a couple of hundred people, but the houses are mostly made of piles of  stone kept together with mortar. These constructions are very vulnerable when the earth starts to shake.
As the Chinese media are focusing on the deadly landslides and the catastrophic rainfall, it is very unlikely that they will report on these small local earthquakes. No other reporting may be expected from this remote, but beautiful part of the world.
