Earthquake Report comment :
Very powerful aftershock in the Bio Bio area in Chile. Luckily the epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean.
The aftershock was this time very shallow at a depth of only 10 km (normally the fatershocks are at a depth of 35 km).
No news of damage or injuries have been reported by the Chile newspapers. The maximum shaking following Oficina Nacional de Emergencia del ministerio del Interior (Onemi) was IV in Conception and a few neighboring villages = light shaking.
QuakeSOS, our earthquake iPhone application has not received incoming alarms. The Mercalli values published by USGS where not experienced on site.
Another earthquake of 4.9 magnitude, creted several alarms.

M 6.8    04-09-1958    Chile   –  Depth 10 km – killing 7 people

Google satellite map of the area showing the kind of terrain the earthquake took place

The earthquake on 4 September 1958 that occurred in Las Melosas, Central Chile represents one of the large damaging intraplate events located in the Andean cordillera crust at about 60 km away from Santiago.
A sequence of 3 earthquakes of magnitude 6.7-6.9 in a span of six minutes struck the Andean Main Cordillera at the latitude of Santiago, Central Chile.
The quakes were preceded by a magnitude 6.0 foreshock one week earlier.
This seismic sequence provided the only documented effects of strong shaking related to shallow earthquakes in a subduction-zone environment in which seismicity is dominated by interplate and intermediate-depth intraplate earthquakes.
The epicenter was located at the junction of the Maipo and El Volcán Rivers, at a depth of about 10 km

“In memory of” is highlighting deadly earthquakes of the past.
People have forgotten a lot of these human tragedies.
We @ Earthquake Report are hopeful that people in these countries and cities will learn from their history and will make sure that they are building Earthquake Proof houses and that they know what to do when the earth will be shaking again.
