Christchurch Earthquake : the impressive list of 265 aftershocks

Seismograph cutout of aftershocks on September 12

Geonet, the website offering the GNS Science earthquake information has produced a list with all aftershocks in the Canterbury region since the massive earthquake on the night of September 4 in Darfield.
Every link in the list will bring you to the detailed report of the specific quake.
We have ranked the list by Magnitude NOT by date and hour.
The list goes from September 4, 4:35 AM until September 17, 3 AM

The bad news : 266 earthquakes in total (including the first M 7.1)
The good news : Since the major shocks of M 7.1 and M 7.4, the maximum value was 5.4 (very powerful but with minimal additional damage or injuries).
More good news : a lot of buildings have since been stabilized with less chance to collapse if a more powerful aftershock would strike.

Important : if you do feel an aftershock, check our ‘live’ seismograph page or check it at the Geonetwebsite

Christchurch earthquake : internationally forgottten, but still shaking constantly

Although the current aftershocks are not mentioned anymore in the USGS and EMSC charts, the inhabitants of Christchurch are still living under the constant threat of a major aftershock and are experiencing many moderate earthquakes every couple of hours.
People who want to see the strength of the quakes can consult them here.
An even more better view can be seen in our dynamic seismograph mapping by the GNS Science, the New Zealand Authority who is following carefully all tectonic activity.
The Magnitude aspect can reveal how powerful an earthquake is, but every earthquake will be felt differently.
The duration of the shaking and a number of additional factors are as important as the Magnitude. The map hereunder is showing very well that 2 aftershocks are lasting a lot longer than all others.
The most powerful aftershocks are mostly located in the Darfield area.

Christchurch aftershocks : Know what to do before, during and after

Below we publish The New Zealand Government preparedness measures for earthquakes.
In the event of a major aftershock, people should read these measures again and again. They can save your life.
These preparedness measures also apply for the entire world. There is no difference in between an earthquake in New Zealand or Japanese.

You can take some simple steps to reduce the danger to yourself,  your family, and property when earthquakes occur.

1. Before an earthquake

• Identify safe places very close to you at home, school or workplace, such as under a sturdy table, or next to an interior wall.
• Develop a Household Emergency Plan and have emergency survival items so that you can cope on your own for at least three days
• Protect property – secure objects and your homes and keep insurance up to date

2. During an earthquake

• Move no more than a few steps to a safe place, drop, cover, and hold on.
• Do not attempt to run outside

Christchurch massive earthquake : A “live” view on the many aftershocks

The good news : The last 5 hours, no important aftershocks have been registered, although M +4 aftershocks can be felt well by the local population
The bad news : Local people have experienced already a lot of aftershocks and a lot more to come (based on other earthquakes with this magnitude)

Although almost no major aftershocks have occurred the last 24 hours (earthquakes of M 4.5 or more are internationally published on USGS en EMSC, but the last 24 hours no new quakes have been registered by them), the image hereunder shows tens and tens of aftershocks as measured in Mc Queens Valley on Banks Peninsula, Canterbury.
The seismograph (Courtesy GeoNet New Zealand – click on the image to go to their scientific website) is a live picture with the most recent timestamp. The original M 7.1 quake cannot be seen on this picture.

The timestamp shown at the top right of the seismograph drum shown below is the time when this image was last refreshed. Each horizontal line (or trace) represents 30 minutes, each vertical line is spaced 1 minute apart; 24 hours of recording are displayed in total. The most recent signal is drawn at the bottom right hand corner of the drum. Then read the traces from right to left, bottom to top, to get from the most recent to the oldest signals. The trace will appear red if the signals are very large; this means they have been clipped to stop them overwriting too much of the surrounding image.

The seismograph gives an idea about the frightening experience people from Canterbury are living in at the moment.
