Earthquake Report comment :
Powerful earthquake under Papua New Guinea New Britain. The epicenter is on the south-eastern side of the island near the mountain villages of Piavi, Bagatavi, Kwai, Senel and Tal. There are no roads in the area.
Based on our experiences PNG rescue services are not alerted for earthquakes under M 6. As these villages can only be reached by trails, and as it is almost for 100 % sure that no telecommunication is present in the area, this will be one of the many “forgotten” earthquakes of PNG, damage or no damage. Let us hope that we are wrong.
With a probable V to VI Mercalli shaking in a mountainous area and rain forest, the chance on devastating landslides is never far away.
