BMKG counters critics of tsunami warning

Earthquake report, who followed all actions from the very beginning,  supports BMKG in his response to these critics.
People living near the Sea and Oceans should immediately evacuate to higher ground when  they feel the earthquake happening  (like in both Pagai islands).

Tsunami Preparedness on vacation
Whenever you go for a beach holiday in an earthquake country, be always aware of a possible Tsunami risk.
Be alarmed if the following natural signs of an approaching tsunami appear :
1) if you feel an earthquake. (even light shaking, the epicenter can be hundreds of km away)
2) if you see an unusual sea level change: sudden sea water retreat or rise.
3) if you hear a rumbling sound of approaching waves.
4) if you hear tsunami alarm sirens
Then you should IMMEDIATELY evacuate to higher ground.

Video animation of how a tsunami is triggered
This animated video is a good example of what happened during the October 25 Mentawai earthquake. The island on the image could be seen as North Pagai and South Pagai.
The difference in this case was that the wave had a max. height of 3 meters (10 inch) and that the wave only reached the Pagai islands and not the mainland of Sumatra.
The time lapse was in this case also totally different.  As the epicenter was quiet close to the Pagai islands (about 30 km (20 miles) the wave must have reached the island shores in about 10 minutes.

Video footage from Australian surfers who survived tsunami
The video comes from an Australian TV station and went on the screen about 2 days after the tsunami.
Our only hope for live video recordings from the tsunami is hereby vanished, as these Australians were almost the only people who had modern material in the very remote and primitive Mentawai, North- and South Pagai islands.
Running to save your life is of course more important than anything else.

Earthquake-Report.com intermediate comment
The Mentawai – Pagai islands earthquake number of victims will normally be higher than 500, Earthquake-Report.com predicts.
The first 24 to 36 hours one could have hoped that people would have fled into the jungle to be safe for other tsunamis, but after 2 days this hope is fading away every hour that passes.
Those counted as missing will probably have been swallowed by the sea or would have been ejected into the jungle.
When an earthquake hits a big city, people can run to all directions and authorities will need many days to determine who is missing and who is showing up.
In this case the situation is completely different. Most of the villages on the Pagai islands are small to very small and people know each other.
Earthquake-Report.com fears that missing people in this case means more victims. We truly hope that we are totally wrong, but we fear for the worst scenario.

Indonesia : Merapi eruption – picture before and after the hot ash cloud

The picture below gives an idea how terribly hot a pyroclastic flow can be.
Th hot ash clouds are burning everything on their way. Nature but also people and infrastructure are charred.
Similar pictures exist from the eruption / explosion of Mount St Helens in Whasington, United States.

Left and right pictures are the same hill.

Indonesia tsunami – A video animation how it happened

During quiet times in between earthquakes (interseismic periods), the oceanic crust is slowly pulled under the continental crust (at about 2 inches/year, the speed fingernails grow). There are places where the plates stick together (locked) and places where they don’t (creeping).

At locked zones, the lower plate pulls the upper plate down with it, causing the island to sink (though at 2 inches/year it is nearly imperceptible). Stress at the locked zone builds.

When the stress becomes too great, the upper plate breaks free and springs back, causing the island to suddenly pop up, an earthquake, and a tsunami.

This “seismic cycle” recurs about every 250 years.

Indonesia : Merapi volcano erupts – 25 people killed on the slopes of the volcano

A. lesto P. Kusumo, Source: my documntation, M...

Image via Wikipedia

UPDATE 28/10 – 08:44 UTC
Death toll of Mt. Merapi rises to 32.
2 seriously burned people have perished from their wounds.
Most of the deaths were people who did not followed the governments advice to evacuate from their houses.
Identification of the heavily burned bodies was extremely difficult. Thus, the body of supposedly Mbah Maridjan, the spiritual gatekeeper of the volcano, had to be identified by his DNA. 4 rows of hot pyroclastic clouds have devastated the village of Kinahrejo on the slopes of the volcano. All houses have been burned down in this village.

UPDATE 27/10 – 08:39 UTC
Reuters reported a few moments ago that at least 28 people have been killed and 14 injured by erupting Mount Merapi. Many houses have been destroyed and the slopes of the volcano are covered with a thick layer of ash.
Prove of a pyroclastic flow is that some bodies were almost unrecognizable, as they were burned by the superheated gases from the volcano.

UPDATE 27/10 – 06:39 UTC
The dead toll is climbing after the first pyroclastic cloud eruption on Mt Merapi. 25 people have lost their live so far.
One of the victims was the mountain’s spiritual gatekeeper.
Seismologists are unsure whether Tuesdays eruption took enough pressure from the volcano to avoid further problems.
The risk of a major explosive eruption with a powerful and devastating adjacent pyroclastic hot cloud is still present. They are continuously following the tremors and are analyzing gases to predict the state of alert. It can take many more days before the people living on the volcano slopes are allowed to return to their houses.
We encourage to read a very good article in the Jakarta Post

UPDATE 19:45 UTC
Fifteen people were reportedly killed in Mount Merapi`s hot clouds on Tuesday with four of them found inside and 11 others outside the home of Mt Merapi caretaker Ki Surakso Hargo, popularly known as Mbah Maridjan. Read more in Antara News Agency

Indonesia’s volcano in dessely populated Central Java erupted on Tuesday afternoon, spewing hot ashes, pushing thousands of people to evacuate, head of volcanology monitoring unit at Volcanology Afgency Muhammad Hendratno said.

Mount Merapi of 2,968 meters high erupted three times, the first eruption was at 17:02 p.m. Jakarta time (1002 GMT), Hendratmo told Xinhua.

Local television reported one baby died after suffering from respiratory problem and 20 others suffered from serious injuries from hot ash.

Hendratmo said that the eruption was the beginning of the eruption phase.

Observer at monitoring post for Mount Merapi in Sleman district of Yoyakarta Heru Saparwoko told Xinhua by phone from the district that the cloud had hampered them to monitor how far the hot ash has spread. “We will keep monitoring the peak of eruption,” he said.

The television footage footage displayed thousands of panic residence rush to leave the dangerous area by car or other vehicles to take shelters in baracks.
