The list will be a surprise for a lot of you.  Many powerful earthquakes are forgotten by the press if they occur in scarcely populated areas or poor countries.
The numbers hereunder are only the top of the iceberg, because people on the countryside are not always easy to reach.

These rules saved the life of many people. The Chillan earthquake of 1930 left more than 30.000 people dead.
  • M 7.0 – 12/01 – Haiti (Port-au-Prince) – 230.000 Dead, 300.000 injured, 1.000.000 homeless – total chaos and devastation – it will take years of aid from the international community to rebuild the capital and the country all together. Haiti was one of the poorest nations in the world at the time of the earthquake.
