Earthquake Report comment :
A few minutes ago a dangerous shallow seaquake occurred in the Ionian sea 52 km from the island of Zakhyntos.
EMSC gives a magnitude of 5.2, considerably less.
GDACS has issued a GREEN earthquake alert for this earthquake, meaning that the risks for damage and injuries will be limited.
110,000 people are living within a radius of 100 km around the epicenter.  During the summer the tourists multiply this number with a big factor.
The values of the earthquake have lowered a little bit. Now USGS gives 5.6 with a depth of 16 km and EMSC gives a Magnitude of 5.3 with a depth of 10 km. EMSC is the best equipped seismological center in the area of the world.
Institue of Geodynamics of Greece reports the following values :  Magnitude : 5.4 – Depth : 26 km.
Scientific data recorded by the local agency can be seen here

Reuters Alertnet : “We felt the earthquake but there are no immediate reports of any damage,” said a police official in Zakynthos.

Due to the earthquake danger, building rules in Zakynthos are very strict.

A number of minor aftershocks are starting to occur.
USGS has received FELT signals from the island of Zakynthos varying from Mercalli I to II (weak)
The Seismogram below gives the recording of the Turkey, Ankara station of this earthquake (the closest we could find in the public network).

The Africa plate subducts beneath the Aegean Sea plate along the Hellenic arc, from the western Peloponnesus through Crete and Rhodes to western Turkey, at a rate of almost 40 mm/year.
Shallow-focus earthquakes (focal depths less than 50 km) occur on faults in the boundary-region of the two plates. From Crete to the west and northwest, most shallow earthquakes near the Hellenic-arc plate boundary are produced as the result of reverse or strike-slip motion
The Anatolian plate moves with a velocity of 25mm/y towards west.
The Aegean plate moves with a velocity of 45mm/y towards southwest.

Useful information to read this daily earthquake list
This earthquake list covers minor and major earthquakes  in the world.
If a more detailed page is present, the earthquake line will be linked to the detailed page.
For your comfort, we will provide in most cases Google Satellite Map links to give you an idea where the earthquake struck, which terrain it happened and if villages or cities are located in the immediate vicinity. The reference for the time zone is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time)
The page is regularly updated to add new quakes.
green color = NOT dangerous for damage or injuries
orange color = MODERATE risk for damage or injuries
red color = CONSIDERABLE risk for damage or injuries

Minor earthquakes are earthquakes without or with little damage risk.  In most cases these earthquakes have a Magnitude smaller than M 5.0 OR earthquakes with an hypocenter (depth) of more than 100 km OR earthquakes up to M 5.9 with an epicenter far away from populated areas.

What do we offer via this twitter link ? :
* The titles of, and links to the in-depth articles of Earthquake-report.com
As you know, we do not just give you a standard quote of an earthquake which you will find in 1,000 websites exactly the same.
@ Earthquake-Report.com we will give you on top of the scientific data, as quick as possible (do not forget that we are volunteers, not a governmental organization) additional facts like : how many people are affected, can the earthquake be potentially damaging, testimonies from people living in the area, links to the Value Added sites and on-line LOCAL Newspapers.
Where possible and if relevant, we will also include the seismograms who are often more scaring than the earthquake itself.

* Automatic alerts of all important earthquakes WORLDWIDE (mostly if they are greater than Magnitude 4) and additionally all USA quakes greater than M 2.5. These automatic alerts are triggered by the United States Geographical Survey (USGS).

Important

Earthquake Report comment :
Here we go again. Since August 9 the Chileans were free of relatively strong aftershocks, the longest period since the devastating earthquake from February 27 when a major Magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck the same area, making 577 casualties.
Yesterdays earthquake in neighboring Argentina was a bad sign for the Chileans. That quake was triggered by the same tectonic plates who are trying to settle down since February 27.
A Magnitude 5.0 is mostly heavy in other parts of the world, but in Chile they are used to much more, although M 5.0 brings February 27 back live again.
This earthquake was felt up to Santiago de Chile, the capital.

Testimonies from the field :
Maritza Bravo Valenzuela : very very strong here in talcahuano
Brunilda Jilbert Miranda : We keep a lantern close to us in the event that there will be more aftershocks
Gilbert Arevalo Navarro : DIEGO Y DE QUE COMUNA ERES TU…FUE MUY FUERTE EN STGO EL TEMBLOR QUE TU SENTISTES…YO SOY DE CURICO Y HOY SE AN SENTIDO VARIOS SISMOS, QUE LAS OFICINAS DE SISMOLOGIA DE CHILE NO LOS INFORMA.-PARECE QUE,TENDREMOS QUE PREPARARNOS, COMO DIC…

Diego Henriquez Campos: I am from Maipu and it felt very strong ! (yo soy de maipu y se sinto muy fuerte!)

In memory of the victims of August 22, 19XX – China killing +10,000 people

M 7.7    22-08-1902   Depth 0 km    China – killing 5650 people
Chinese reports mention more than 10,000 people killed.
The earthquake radiated to many places.
From Urumchi in the East to Leninabad in Russia in the East, it reached Hetian in the South and Yili in the North. More than 30000 houses were collapsed and more than 10000 people were killed. The banks of the river collapsed and the cracks lasted as long as 50 kilometers. New springs occurred from the new cracks.

“In memory of” is highlighting deadly earthquakes of the past.
People have forgotten a lot of these human tragedies.
We @ Earthquake Report are hopeful that people in these countries and cities will learn from their history and will make sure that they are building Earthquake Proof houses and that they know what to do when the earth will be shaking again.
