“In memory of” is highlighting deadly earthquakes of the past.
People have forgotten a lot of these human tragedies.

M 6.8  20-08-1988   Nepal Depth 57 km  – killing 1450 people (other sources report 721)
Seven hundred twenty-one people killed, 6,553 injured and 64,470 buildings damaged in eastern Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley. Maximum intensity VIII.  Liquefaction observed in a 5,500 sq. km area of southern Nepal.  At least 277 people killed, thousands injured and extensive damage in northern Bihar, India, particularly in the Darbhanga-Madhubani-Saharsa area.  Damage in the Gangtok area, Sikkim and in the Darjiling area, India.  Felt in large parts of northern India from Delhi to the Burma border and in much of Bangladesh.  The focal mechanism is moderately well controlled and corresponds to reverse faulting with a large strike-slip component.

M 6.5  20-08-1989   Djibouti Depth 12 km  – killing 2 people
Two people killed, two injured and damage and rockslides caused in the Galafi-Yoboki area, Djibouti. Ground cracks were observed at Galafi and four springs were destroyed in the area.  Felt strongly throughout Djibouti. Damage and landslides occurred in northeastern Ethiopia, particularly along the Aseb-Adis Abeba highway. Felt at Aseb.  The focal mechanism is moderately well controlled and corresponds to normal faulting with a moderate strike-slip component.

We @ Earthquake Report are hopeful that people in these countries and cities will learn from their history and will make sure that they are building Earthquake Proof houses and that they know what to do when the earth will be shaking again.
