Papua New Guinea – M 6.3 – Heavy but deep earthquake in Papua New Guinea’s New Britain

Earthquake Report comment :
This earthquake will NOT be dangerous because of the big depth of the hypocenter, however because of it’s  strength many people in a big radius will have felt  weak to light shaking.
60,000 people live in a radius of 100 km around the epicenter.
GDACS issued a GREEN earthquake report (see below)
Biggest risk for people and infrastructure are landslides which can be triggered after the shaking.
Local Tsunamis provoked by undersea landslides are also possible and can be devastating, however based on the satellite images from the ocean floor, we predict only a very limited chance that such a landslide will happen.
There are NO roads in the vicinity of the epicenter.
As Papua New Guinea has a very basic Disaster Department and is hit by frequent and powerful earthquakes, we do not expect to get more information on this earthquake, which is minor compared to many other earthquakes from the last several weeks.
