Earthquakes list August 14, 2010

Useful information to read this daily earthquake list
This earthquake list covers minor and major earthquakes  in the world.
If a more detailed page is present, the earthquake line will be linked to the detailed page.
For your comfort, we will provide in most cases Google Satellite Map links to give you an idea where the earthquake struck, which terrain it happened and if villages or cities are located in the immediate vicinity.
The page is regularly updated to add new quakes.
Minor earthquakes are earthquakes without or with little damage risk.  In most cases these earthquakes have a Magnitude smaller than M 5.0 OR earthquakes with an hypocenter (depth) of more than 100 km OR earthquakes up to M 5.9 with an epicenter far away from populated areas.
The reference for the time zone is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time)
green color = NOT dangerous for damage or injuries
orange color = MODERATE risk for damage or injuries
red color = CONSIDERABLE risk for damage or injuries

Pakistan – M 5.0 – moderate but very dangerous shallow earthquake in Baluchistan

Earthquake Report comment :
Although we can state that this earthquake is only moderate in strength, Earthquake Report declares this earthquake as very dangerous. Epicenter (if confirmed) is very near the small villages of Anjira and Nokjo at an altitude of approx. 1700 meter.
The mountainous terrain however is an easy target for landslides and the poor construction of the houses in this area is well known. Additionally we don’t know whether the heavy rains from the last few weeks made the ground unstable.
We would be very surprised if we will be further informed from this earthquake, as the Pakistani government has other issues to cope with at the moment (the flood disaster).
Additionally the earthquake occurred at 1:18 am at night.

USA, Alaska – M 5.8 – Weak and deep earthquake near Alaska’s Mount Redoubt volcano

Earthquake Report comment :
The hypocenter (depth) of this weak earthquake was measured at a comfortable 143 km.
It was well felt at the other side of the Cook Inlet, although people reported only weak to light shaking.
Most of the earthquakes in this area (Lake Clark and further north) have a deep hypocenter.
The Pacific plate subducts the North American plate at a speed of approx. 70 mm (25 in.) / year.

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve was created to protect scenic beauty (volcanoes, glaciers, wild rivers and waterfalls), populations of fish and wildlife, watersheds essential for red salmon, and the traditional lifestyle of local residents.
Iliamna and Redoubt are two active volcanoes in Lake Clark National Park. Iliamna has not erupted in historic time, but is frequently  seen steaming from its summit fumaroles. Redoubt’s most recent eruptive period occurred during the spring of 2009. Redoubt dusted the region with volcanic ash and sent lahars (mudflows) down the Drift River. Both volcanoes are continuously monitored by the Alaska Volcano Observatory.
