Indonesia – M 5.5 – Moderate earthquake in Java (update)

Latest update below in green.

Earthquake Report comment :
A moderate but dangerous earthquake struck on the coast of Java, only 75 km from Bandung.
GDACS has issued a ORANGE earthquake alert = moderately dangerous.
The earthquake occurred in the middle of the night a 2:10 AM
123,000 people live in a radius of only 5 km from the epicenter
303,000 people live in a radius of only 10 km from the epicenter
716,000 people live in a radius of only 20 km from the epicenter
2,176,000 people live in a radius of only 50 km from the epicenter
14,423,900 people live in a radius of only 5 km from the epicenter
Calculation models from USGS predict a strong shaking in the epicenter area. The earthquake will certainly have been felt in a big pert of Java. A this time (1 u 20 after the quake struck) no reports have been published on the local Indonesian English media.

Update 21:43 UTC : No special news bulletins or on-line news in the Indonesian on line news-sites.  Although it is still the middle of the night in Indonesia, we can conclude that people have not been alarmed by this event. In case other news appears, we will inform directly. We hope that the confirmation of NO damage and NO injuries will follow soon.
A lot of confusion about the hypocenter (depth).
EMSC is reporting a depth of 80 km.
BMKG (Indonesia) is stating only 10 km and a Magnitude of M 5.8, but with an epicenter in the sea

Final Update 22:15 UTC : Taking into account local witnesses and the data of the local BMKG seismological department, there will be a very limited risk on damage and/or injuries as the epicenter, contrary to earlier reports from USGS, is 50 km out in the Ocean. This earthquake would have been potentially dangerous when the epicenter would have been under the island. ER is relieved that all will be OK.

Most important Earthquake Data:
Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 02:10:21 AM at epicenter

65 km (40 miles) SSE of Sukabumi, Java, Indonesia (125 km BMKG)
75 km (50 miles) SW of Bandung, Java, Indonesia
