Southern Iran – M 5.3 – Another earthquake strikes near Negar (Update 3)

Earthquake Report comment :
Less than 24 hours after a powerful earthquake struck close the city of Torbat-e Heydariyeh in Northern Iran, another earthquake struck the Southern part of the country 32 km northeast of the city of Baft (population 43,077)
As this earthquake occurred at a depth of 22 km (EMSC states 10 km) , damage and injured people are possible.

Based on our experience with recent earthquakes, Iran media are disclosing only drops of information mostly after many hours.

Update 1 : Baft is a town in the Kerman province of Iran (population 37,000, elevation 2270 m), The city is located in 155 kilometers southwestern of Kerman city.], administrative center of the Baft county.
Kerman, the closest big city ca 95 km from the epicenter has a population of 533,799 (2005).

Update 2 (more than 24 hours after the earthquake !) :
Most of the earthquakes damage was located in Negar,
Excerpt of the Tehran times from August 1 : There have been no reports of casualties but many homes have been damaged.
Rescue teams have been dispatched to the stricken region from the neighboring cities, an official from Kerman’s Red Crescent said.
20 percent of buildings have sustained 15 to 40 percent damages, the local official added.
“Due to the town’s ancient structure, today’s earthquake damaged about 700 houses,” Ali Reza Kazemi, the mayor of Negar, told the IRNA news agency.

Update 3 (August 2, 16:15 UTC)
At least one person was killed, and 300 others were injured.An estimated one-third of the buildings in four villages were demolished.The official Iranian News Agency quoted one Red Crescent official as saying there was a danger of worse earthquakes because one of the two quakes Friday night and Saturday was not followed by aftershocks.The stricken areas did not include the Islamic Republic’s nuclear sites.
